Prentice Mulford was a New Age thinker long before the term was coined. In the 1880s he foresaw the Internet, world-wide air travel and many other future realities. In this work we have taken many of the concepts from his various books and put them into one book. His unique and direct style allows for our exploration of the most perplexing aspects of what it means to be a spiritual entity living with and through a material body. This is the owners manual for the human condition. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Al James. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/lumo/000007/bk_lumo_000007_sample.mp3. Once a year, millions of Minnesotans step out of their air conditioned homes to venture into the dusty outdoor furnace that is late August to congregate at the Minnesota State Fair. Driven by the promise of a deep fried oasis, carnival rides, and people watching, the Minnesota State Fair is a tradition for many Minnesotans, including Ben Nesvig. In the Minnesota State Fair: Deep Fried Thoughts on Cheese Curds, Carnies, and the Human Condition, Ben Nesvig shares his stream of consciousness journey at the Minnesota State Fair with listeners as he explores everything from deep fried cookie dough, the thrill of a giant yellow slide, and ultimately, what prompts Minnesotans to make the greasy pilgrimage. 1. This week on Car Talk, Steve moved to Chicago for a job and a girlfriend. He lost both. But what´s confusing him is why he didn´t lose his ride, as well. His Acura was the only car that didn´t get towed from a parking lot during a party. Did the parking deities take pity on him? Elsewhere, Chuck decided to cut his air conditioner belt because it was smoking, and now may find himself on the FBI´s Most Wanted list; and Heidi may find out why her Check Engine light is blinking, if she can make it through a few Magliozzi detours into Kirchoff´s laws, MIT admissions, and the U.S. Army. Also, the final chapter of the Suzy Saga. She made it home to Carlsbad, but did she manage to make it across Mexico in her Vanagon? Did she even make it to Mexico in her Vanagon? All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk. [Broadcast Date: January 19, 2013] 1. Language: English. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/rt/cart/130119/rt_cart_130119_sample.mp3. Ryan Bingham´s job as a Career Transition Counselor - he fires people - has kept him airborne for years. Although he has come to despise his line of work, he has come to love the culture of what he calls ´´Airworld´´ - finding contentment within pressurized cabins, anonymous hotel rooms, and a wardrobe of wrinkle-free slacks. With a letter of resignation sitting on the desk of his boss and the hope of a job with a mysterious consulting firm, Ryan Bingham is agonizingly close to his ultimate goal, his Holy Grail: one million frequent flier miles. But before he achieves this long-desired freedom, conditions begin to deteriorate. With perception, wit, and wisdom, Up in the Air combines brilliant social observation with an acute sense of the psychic costs of our rootless existence, and confirms Walter Kirn as one of the most savvy chroniclers of American life. 1. Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett on this archival edition of Fresh Air. Called one of the greatest improvisers in the history of jazz, Jarrett was famous for his wildly passionate solo recitals. In 1996, Jarrett came down with a mysterious illness - an interstitial bacterial parasite - that caused him to stop performing for about two and a half years. Jarrett has started performing and recording again, but he still keeps a low public profile, so his condition will not worsen again. His newest CD is Whisper Not. His other recent CD, Melody at Night, With You, was a solo album Jarrett recorded at his home studio in rural New Jersey. (Original Broadcast Date: September 11, 2000) 1. Language: English. The first British major success of World War II was when the Royal Navy forced the preying pocket battleship, Graf Spee, to scuttle at sea. Hitler had ordered a blockade of the British Isles and for some months German U-boats and warships caused havoc among allied merchant shipping carrying vital supplies. In 1941, the one sided battle of the Atlantic became more even when the Royal Navy started moving ships in convoy with escorts using radar and information from British scientists who had cracked the Kreigsmarine version of the Enigma Code captured by the Royal Navy. The perils of the Atlantic were only equalled by the convoys on the run to northern Russia. Sub-zero temperatures, pack ice and appalling weather conditions plus the menacing Luftwaffe and the German Navy based in Norway, made it one of the most hazardous actions of the entire war. Meanwhile, in the air, bomber planes of the RAF and U.S. air force were incessantly bombarding German industries and cities. Casualties on the ground were devastating and the life expectancy of the aircrew was alarmingly short. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Timothy West.
